The sound of the heartbeat in your mother’s womb is the first natural rhythm that we hear. A rhythm that stays with you and propels you forward throughout your life. It’s this natural rhythm that we actually engage when we play the drums, which has many benefits. One of these benefits is inner peace, an inner peace that flows from a heart in tune with it’s own rhythm, unlocking its inner inhibitions.

In the same way that alcohol releases our inhibitions of conscious thought which tell us what should or should not be done or said, inhibitions hold us back from saying and doing what you would naturally do if we weren’t thinking about the consequences.

I have been teaching people of all ages how to play the drums for many years now and it still amazes me how popular it is and of the fact that 90% keep it up having lessons each week year after year. I teach a lot in primary schools and at the end of the year when year 6 are leaving I always ponder on the thought that some of these children have been having drum lessons constantly for the last six years. I believe there is something very special about playing the drums and people are reluctant to give it up.

So what is it that makes playing the drums so appealing? First of all the drum set is seen as a very cool instrument and is a way to express individualism and personality, when we express our true nature we feel good about ourselves and feel more confident. Initially the drums are also easier to play compared with lets say the piano or guitar, you get quick results and this can be very encouraging .Learning the drums feels easy and fun – Great!

However it always brings me pleasure when the realisation comes that to play the drums well is in fact very difficult, requires great control and awareness. Another factor for its popularity is quite alarming – anger management! All of us carry some kind of frustration or anger in varying degrees so it is virtually impossible to have a healthy balanced emotional life without a harmless regular blow out. One of the schools that I teach in is for children with behaviour problems, they all have one thing in common – anger issues. Drumming seems to help and is very popular, they look forward to it each week and feel better for it.

When I started playing the drums it was the best decision I made. I always had something to look forward to, I used to practice every day and felt I had a real purpose, I soon joined a local band and am still gigging now. I got into teaching and am making a good living from drumming. Most of the good things that have happened to me and most of all my good friendships are related to playing the drums.

Taking up the drums could be the best decision you make!
